BVI Dispute Resolution partner Sarah Thompson has a broad practice with particular expertise in complex, high-value and multi-jurisdictional corporate and commercial disputes, fraud and asset recovery cases.
Sarah's practice in the BVI encompasses the full spectrum of disputes that arise in the jurisdiction, including company and shareholder disputes, civil fraud and asset tracing, enforcement, trusts litigation, cryptocurrency and digital asset-related disputes and contentious insolvency and restructuring proceedings. She has advised a wide variety of clients and has experience in obtaining all forms of interim remedies, including freezing orders, receivership and disclosure orders.
Sarah began her legal career at Linklaters and subsequently practiced at a boutique firm in the City of London, where her practice was focused on financial services litigation.
Since relocating to the BVI in 2017, Sarah has worked on some of the jurisdiction's leading cases. Examples of Sarah's work include (all prior to joining Ogier):
acting for the joint receivers appointed by the BVI court over defendant companies in the context of a high-value, complex and multi-jurisdictional fraud claim
acting for the trustees of a significant family trust defending proprietary claims by certain of the discretionary beneficiaries
acting for the liquidators of a BVI company on claims brought against the company’s former directors for breach of duty
acting for the defendant (BVI company) in the defence of a high-value dishonest assistance claim brought against it by Russia's largest private bank
acting for the third defendant / ancillary claimant in respect of proceedings brought by an activist shareholder relating to the issuance of shares in a NYSE listed property development company
Prior to joining Ogier in September 2024, Sarah was a Partner in the Litigation Insolvency and Restructuring team of another offshore law firm.
Sarah is a graduate of the University of Oxford (Christ Church). Sarah is a member of INSOL and the Recovery and Insolvency Specialists Association of the Cayman Islands and BVI (RISA), the BVI Bar Association and the International Women's Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation (BVI Chapter).
