Background and experience
Maria has significant trial and hearing experience, including representing clients in appellate courts and in arbitration proceedings in Hong Kong in respect of cases involving fraud, investment disputes, breach of trust and fiduciary duties, dishonest assistance, conspiracy and professional negligence. Maria has also appeared as counsel in proceedings in New Zealand.
Since joining Ogier, Maria's work has included acting in high value Cayman and BVI court proceedings involving cryptocurrency exchanges and funds, minority shareholder rights and failed investment funds.
Maria's recent achievements include:
- Acting for the limited partner of an exempted limited partnership in a claim against the general partner and other related parties in respect of a loss of over HKD900 million.
- Opposing a just and equitable winding up petition presented against a New York listed company.
- Acting for the liquidators of Three Arrows Capital Limited, one of the most prominent cryptocurrency hedge funds.
Prior to joining Ogier, Maria was a senior associate at an international law firm in Hong Kong. Maria graduated from Victoria University of Wellington in 2010 with Bachelor degrees in Law, Accounting and Finance. She subsequently completed a Master of Laws at the University of Cambridge in 2011, before starting her legal career at Chapman Tripp in New Zealand. Maria relocated to Hong Kong in 2014. Maria is a Registered Foreign Lawyer regulated by the law society of Hong Kong
