Ogier volunteers have been giving their time to support "Every Child Our Future" - an initiative led by the firm's former managing partner Nick Kershaw that provides vital literacy support amongst Key Stage 1 children (children aged between five and seven).
Volunteers from the firm, including partners, IT and HR staff, have been reading with children at Rouge Bouillon School each week to support them in overcoming early difficulties with literacy skills and catch up with their peers.
As well as learning new skills themselves – supporting young children in their learning journey – the volunteers have had an opportunity to see those children blossom in ability and confidence as they get back on track.
Every Child Our Future, a registered charity, works in collaboration with the Education department in Jersey. Its aim is to improve both literacy and numeracy standards on the islands and actively promote a culture in which the community takes responsibility and participates in the education of its children.
Head of literacy at Rouge Buillion Nicola McCreanney commented "ECOF has provided some excellent training and volunteers who have been fundamental in increasing the frequency of reading for our children. This reading has been very valuable for the children and has supported the work of teachers, we would like to say thank you to the volunteers and hope that it can continue."
A volunteer himself, Ogier's Jersey Practice Partner Raulin Amy said: "Our firm is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year and our role in the community is important to us, which is why we've embraced a new CSR strategy with a theme of supporting education. That strategy spans each of our jurisdictions, but I can't think of a better example than the ECOF initiative. I've enjoyed my own volunteering sessions, and it's great to see the youngsters get some of the extra help that they need."
