Ogier has provided over US$ 3,500 worth of new audiovisual equipment and reading materials to Joyce Samuel Primary School, the firm's adopted school in the British Virgin Islands.
The audiovisual equipment included four multimedia projectors and eight portable radio and sound systems for classroom use. The new reading materials included 36 copies each of three books (The Kite, Lucky Dip and On The Beach) aimed at new readers. Classroom sessions involving the books will form a key part of the school's current initiative to improve reading and comprehension through the school.
Ogier's continued support of Joyce Samuel Primary School was very warmly received by the school’s principal, Orlandette Crabbe, who said: “Augmenting our audiovisual resources is a major goal, and Ogier's gift has suddenly given us a great boost which will really contribute to the learning experience of our students."
Speaking of the reading materials provided by Ogier, Ms Crabbe said: "The particular focus of our current reading initiative is early intervention. We are seeking to provide more reading material specifically aimed at our lower primary classes and to encourage our teachers to employ more guided reading sessions. Ogier's contribution will allow students to each have a copy of the material allowing them to follow and learn with greater ease (and with less distraction)."
Representatives from the Joyce Samuel Primary School student council, accompanied by teacher Ms. Isis Daniel, attended Ogier's BVI office to receive the equipment and materials on Tuesday May 2nd. Welcomed by partners Ray Wearmouth and Michael Killourhy and practice manager Decoy Mactavious, the children also enjoyed a brief tour of the office and were shown the plaque commemorating the official opening ceremony on 12 September 2012 and the participation at that ceremony of the students of Joyce Samuel.
Ogier officially adopted Joyce Samuel Primary School in 2010. Since then the firm has helped fund a number of projects and initiatives, including a new PA system, new play equipment and a new gardening area, and has run a popular school readers programme at the school in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Tortola.
Joyce Samuel Primary School was named 2016 Primary School of the Year at the BVI’s "Stars in Education" gala in that year and Ms Crabbe, its principal, was named BVI Primary Principal of the Year at both the 2016 gala and the 2017 gala held earlier this year.
“We are very proud to support this award winning school and look forward to working on their future projects,” said partner Michael Killourhy.
