Nicholas Tam named one of Greater China's leading young lawyers by LexisNexis

News

01 November 2022

Hong Kong

Ogier lawyer Nicholas Tam has been named one of Greater China's leading young lawyers by LexisNexis in their inaugural top 40 under 40 list.

Inclusion on the list is determined by the individual's potential to grow and lead the development of the legal sector in Greater China (mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) and is judged by a panel comprising eminent professional leaders in the region including senior barristers, lawyers, corporate leaders, legal technologists and other senior members of the legal profession.

Based in Hong Kong, Nick is an offshore litigator handling complex multi-jurisdictional disputes spanning banking, insolvency and restructuring, shareholder disputes, trusts, and general commercial matters. He has a particular interest in the interplay between the insolvency jurisdiction and international arbitration, and has previously been recognised among the world's best young arbitration professionals. He is also a panel arbitrator for the Centre for International Alternative Dispute Resolution, Pacific International Arbitration Centre, and the Thailand Arbitration Centre.

While studying for his Commerce and Law Degrees at The University of Melbourne, Nick became a Research Fellow in a US Senator’s Office in Washington DC, and won the grand final of the Australian Constitutional Law Moot National Championship. He graduated from the PCLL program in Hong Kong with three major awards including the Sir Po-Shing Woo Gold Medal in Law, and has since written multiple chapters on Hong Kong law in leading professional textbooks.

Nick has been a key driver for the Ogier Dispute Resolution Team becoming the leading offshore litigation offering in Hong Kong. During his time with the firm, Nick has worked on prominent company and insolvency cases before the BVI and Cayman Courts, as well as appeals to the Privy Council, with many resulting in landmark judgments shaping the development of company and insolvency law in those jurisdictions. Recent examples include the Cayman Court's decision in Grand State; the global restructuring of NASDAQ-listed Luckin Coffee; Baidu's US$3.6 billion takeover bid for Chinese streaming service YY Live; successfully opposing an asset sale that had been endorsed by an insolvent company's liquidators in Pacific Harbor; and the first-ever Cayman decision restoring a dissolved company at common law.

Oliver Payne, Head of Dispute Resolution in Asia, said: "This is another piece of well-deserved recognition for Nick, who has excelled during his career. We're very pleased to see his contribution to the Ogier team and the legal profession recognised in this way by a leading industry body."
