Green funds specialist Tim Clipstone speaks on sustainable finance at the Guernsey Green Finance Law

Ogier partner Tim Clipstone was part of a panel of experts discussing sustainable finance at the launch of strategic action group Guernsey Green Finance yesterday.

Guernsey Green Finance has been created with the support of leading politicians and has been formed to support strategic action in line with commitments to UN Principles for Responsible Investing.

Tim has written extensively on green investments against a backdrop of increasing capital being directed into environment, social and governance (ESG) investing, and Guernsey's competitive positioning in the space following the launch of the Guernsey Green Fund in 2018.

Tim Clipstone said: "With the world needing to invest huge sums of money (some estimate in excess of $3.5 trillion dollars of investment annually) into clean and alternative energy research and generation to halt the increase in global temperatures, there is strong demand from governments and investors alike to be able to identify and invest in structures that pursue green or sustainable investment strategies that contribute to carbon emission reduction and clean energy generation. 

"Many of the latest finance industry developments in Guernsey have been designed to provide investors with assurance that the financial products they are investing in are, in fact, genuinely green and sustainable. 

"These include the Guernsey Green Fund wrapper and the bespoke Green Segment on TISE (the Guernsey headquartered exchange).  In addition, the Guernsey Financial Services Commission has published a paper on suggestions for the development of green insurance and Guernsey launched Guernsey Green Finance, which will be looking to reinforce Guernsey's credentials as a Green Financial Centre. 

"In recognition of this, Guernsey has been admitted as one of the United Nation's Finance Centres for Sustainability (FC4S) Network at the end of 2018."
