Ogier advises Brookfield on a substantial investment in GEMS Education

Deal

19 July 2024

Cayman Islands, Dubai

1 min read

Ogier's team in the Cayman Islands has advised Brookfield on its substantial minority investment in Dubai-based GEMS Education - one of the largest private equity deals in the Gulf.

Brookfield Asset Management, a Toronto-based fund manager, led a consortium of investors on the deal. GEMS began in 1959 as a single school in Dubai and is now the largest private school provider in the region, with more than 60 schools and 130,000 students across the Middle East and North Africa.

Ogier acted as Cayman Islands counsel for Brookfield, assisting Linklaters with the wider transaction. The Ogier team was led by partner James Heinicke with support from senior associates Marcus Hallan and Jasjit Grewal.

James said: "We were delighted to act as Cayman counsel for Brookfield on this exciting acquisition. The Middle East private equity market is experiencing significant growth and Ogier, with our presence in the region and significant private equity expertise, is well placed to advise clients across the range of private equity transactions."
